Mowery ends ‘Voice’ journey

Jimmy Mowery
Altoona native Jimmy Mowery was not one of eight contestants who won a public vote Tuesday night on “The Voice,” ending his journey on the show as one of the top 24.
Each coach had the opportunity to save one contestant from elimination on each team, but he was not chosen by his coach, John Legend.
Mowery performed “Youngblood” by 5 Seconds of Summer during Monday’s live episode.
His coach, John Legend, was shown bobbing his head to the beat during Mowery’s his performance and stood up to applaud his efforts as he walked off stage.
Legend said Monday that he wanted Mowery on his team since the beginning of the competition — and “stealing” him from Adam Levine was one of the best decisions he had made as a coach.
In Altoona, Mowery’s efforts on “The Voice” were lauded by Mayor Matt Pacifico, who declared the month of May as Jimmy Mowery Month in a ceremony held at City Hall on Monday.
The ceremony celebrated him as the only Altoona native to compete on “The Voice” and recognized his placement among the top 24 contestants on the show, thanks to the outpouring of hometown support in Altoona and Myrtle Beach, S.C. — where he now resides with his wife, Heather.
The recognition also honors Mowery’s late father, James, whose lifelong dream of becoming a professional singer was being fulfilled by his son on a national level.
“I’m proud to be able to honor Jimmy, especially his story and journey,” Pacifico said. “He’s a good example of someone who can persevere through tragedy and follow their dreams.”
Monday’s ceremony, which was organized by Sue Griep, Victim Witness Coordinator for the Blair County District Attorney’s Office, drew a large crowd for Mowery — including his family and friends.
“Jimmy is finally living his dream,” his mother, Tammy, said. “I’m in a dream, pinch me!”
Debbie Carothers, Mowery’s mother-in-law, proudly described what the journey has meant to her.
“I’m so proud of him and Heather, and glad to see good things happening to such a great guy,” she said.
His brother, Jacob, added, “This has been a long time coming. It was expected, but it was just a matter of time. The next step is exciting and we are along for the ride!”
Jacob went on to close the ceremony, saying, “The next step is making the Mowery name a household name.”
Home viewers can continue voting for the remaining contestants, starting at 8 p.m. Mondays through 7 a.m. Tuesdays with a limit of 10 votes each on NBC.com/voicevote and “The Voice” official app. Full versions of the songs performed can be streamed on Apple Music, which also counts as one vote.
Contestants perform at 8 p.m. Mondays and voting results are revealed at 9 p.m. Tuesdays, airing live on NBC.
