September 11, 2007 - Neil Rudel
Joe Paterno wandered into the non-conference schedule Tuesday and mentioned how it would be nice to play Pitt again. That was after he talked about renewing with Syracuse (two years) and Nebraska (two years).
Then he quickly stipulated that the Nittany Lions need seven home games in order to balance a budget to support 29 varsity sports (which is 15 more than Pitt, BTW). He also went out of his way to point out that Pitt needs PSU more than vice versa, noting that Pitt charged more for PSU tickets the last time the teams split a four-game series (1997-2000).
Paterno ducked a question on whether he would recommend Penn State signing a 10-year series of six at PSU and four in Pittsburgh -- if the Panthers would agree to it.
And, for the record, Pitt would be idiots not to, given the state of their program and what the presence of PSU could do on the Panthers' home schedule.
Speaking of Pitt, the Panthers are now searching for a new AD. The job description ought to include getting Penn State and Notre Dame on the schedule in opposite years.
