Putting a lid on NBA Finals

June 18, 2008 - Neil Rudel

Thoughts on the NBA Finals:

*All credit goes to the Celtics, who outplayed, outdefended and outcoached the Lakers throughout the series.

*The reputation the European post players have for being soft took another hit in this series as Pau Gasol and Radmonovic might as well have been matadors. Add them to Dirk Nowitzki's performance the last couple of years.

*Maybe the Eastern conference isn't as collectively inferior to the West as had been advertised. No question Boston had its hands full with Atlanta, Cleveland and Detroit, but maybe that helped strengthen the Celtics, too.

*Kobe settled for too many bad shots.

*Gotta be happy for Paul Pierce, who was badly stabbed early in his career in a Boston area nightclub.

*Best picture: Garnett hugging Bill Russell. Love how the old Celtics -- Russell, Heinsohn, Hondo -- were visibly supportive. Would like to have seen Bird, never mind his Pacers' affiliation, there, too.

*Think Rondo answered a few questions?

*I don't know that I ever remember a basketball coach getting a Gatorade bath like the one Doc Rivers had doused on him -- on the court.

*For those keeping track (besides my wife seeking winnings), I finished third in the Fantasy playoff, 1.5 points behind co-winners Ryan Eicher and Joe Sheetz. That's the bad news. The good news is I remained ahead my arch-rival, Larry McAleer.
