Band on the run
October 7, 2008 - Neil Rudel
While waiting for a flight back from the Purdue game Sunday morning, had an interesting discussion with a Boilermaker fan at the Indy Airport.
The man's theory was that the presence of the Penn State Blue Band in the end zone helped steer two field-goal attempts to sail astray by Purdue's Chris Summers.
I wasn't so sure, since Summers also missed an extra point and has been in a big slump lately.
But it also got me to thinking about the enthusiasm and commitment Penn State has in its football program. The band makes two road trips per year and there's no question it makes its presence felt, particularly in some road stadiums, such as Purdue, that don't always fill up.
Meanwhile, the subject of the band is still in the news as Wisconsin has benched its band for hazing. A decision has yet to be made on whether Wisconsin will reinstate its band for Saturday's game with visitng Penn State.
No question the band could give the Badgers a lift, and they'll need it after losing their second straight game of the season to Ohio State last Saturday.
