The Year of the Ox!
January 23, 2009 - Jim Price
Monday, January 26, marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year, a symbol of spring celebration. This coming year, 4707 on the Chinese calendar, is the year of the ox.
This Saturday night, January 24, is the eve before Chinese New Year’s Eve. And one Altoona area venue is recognizing the occasion and striking up the celebration.
For the third consecutive year, Aldo’s in Juniata is presenting a Chinese New Year party. The party will feature a Chinese food buffet, free Asian beer sampling from Furrer Beverage, party favors, a champagne toast at midnight, and live music from two area band favorites, Half Tempted and The Marauders. Admission will be $8.
Approaching the 20th anniversary of their debut on area stages, Half Tempted will fire up the party by again celebrating guitar rock of the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. Lead singer/guitarist Ron Dalansky, bassist Joe George and drummer Clint Carothers can be expected to perform copious amounts of classic rock standards by AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Brownsville Station, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and many more; with an occasional newer favorite by Buckcherry or Kid Rock thrown in along the way. Half Tempted still delivers their rock with heart and enthusiasm, and will likely trigger dancing and headbanging in front of the stage before their set is done.
The Marauders will again provide their fiery brand of punk-driven roots rock and rockabilly. Singer/guitarist Ben Dumm, upright bass player Chris Lawson and drummer Abe Weber will perform favorites from their catalog of original roots-geared rock numbers, including several from their latest CD, Dial M for Marauder, released last summer on Pittsburgh blues/roots indie label Bonedog Records. The Marauders will keep the tempo fast and the pacing tight, and fans can expect to see Dumm “surf” atop Lawson’s bass before the end of the show.
For a different kind of New Year’s celebration, and live musical entertainment from two of the Altoona area’s top bands, Aldo’s is the place to be this Saturday night.
Aldo’s is located at 623 4th Avenue in Juniata. For more information, call 943-9907.
