Super Bowl week -- Wednesday
January 28, 2009 - Buck Frank
Press conferences for both the Cardinals and Steelers were set up for today. The Cardinals' one was at 8 a.m. -- an early start for a team from the west. The Steelers' ran from 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
For the Steelers' press session, we were shuttled out to the University of South Florida, which was nearly a half-hour drive from downtown Tampa.
Mike Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger each answered a few questions, then reporters had the chance to interview all of the Steelers -- again! Media Day was Tuesday, but I think that's set up for the non-sports media. Wednesday was a much better setting -- not as crowded -- and you were able to get a chance to speak to any Steeler you wanted to.
It's beginning to get a little difficult in coming up with different ways to ask the same questions. You could literally write a hundred stories from here if you had the time and space in the paper.
The players have been super cooperative. Roethlisberger was going around video-taping interviews. He started taping a Max Starks interview, and Starks had fun with it.
Last night (Tuesday) after all of my Media Day stories were written, I attended the one and only party set up for the media. No, we the media don't have access to the big parties later in the week -- unless you have a connection. The media party was especially intriguing for me because 38 Special played for more than an hour.
As one who grew up in the 1980s, it was fun to see those guys up close, and they played all of their hits -- My favorite: "Back Where You Belong' and Scotty Franco's favorite: "Take Me Back to Paradise.'
With the media party out of the way, I'll be working tonight writing stories for our Super Bowl XLIII preview guide that will be inserted in Saturday's paper. Make sure you get a copy.
I'll check back in Thursday. It's the last day the media will have access to the players until Sunday night after the game.
