Ken Brumbaugh Memorial Race and more

March 17, 2009 - Erik Brown
Well, it’s obviously been a very long time since my last blog post – 56 days to be precise. Avid runner, and loyal Against The Wind reader, Bill Kibler asked me today if I was having cramped fingers. I explained that I’ve been working around the clock to do all of the things accountants are asked to do at this time of year so that I could take my family on a 7 day western Caribbean cruise (last week) over spring break. Bill who is also a reporter for the Mirror wasn’t buying it. He just smiled and called it a disgrace. He was kidding of course, but we runners don’t suffer lame excuses very well. So, I’m back online!
The Hollidaysburg Area YMCA will kick off its 2009 Community Wellness Challenge Series at Leopold Park, Altoona, PA on Sunday, March 29th at 1:00 PM with the Ken Brumbaugh Memorial Race.
Started in 1996, the race memorializes Kenneth E. Brumbaugh Jr., avid runner, cyclist, athlete and cancer survivor. Ken was killed in an auto / pedestrian accident in 1995 while he was doing what he loved – running.
The race, now in its 14th year, is a tribute to Ken. It recognizes and celebrates the steadfast spirit of people, especially those faced with adversity or loss. As a fitting memorial, proceeds from the race benefit the Youth Outreach Programs of the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA.
Over the past 14 years, the race has grown from a small kinship of Ken’s friends and family, into the opening event of the highly-anticipated YMCA Community Wellness Challenge Series. This year’s event will include a 5 mile run, a 2 mile run, and a 2 mile walk.
The Altoona Mirror has a limited number of complimentary entries available on a first come first served basis as long as they last with a limit of two per request. Contact me at 814-946-7482 or by e-mail at to make a request.
In addition to the Ken Brumbaugh Memorial Race, the 2009 Community Wellness Challenge Series includes seven other races as follows:
The Bud Shuster Run for your Life Race – Saturday, April 25th
YMCA Altoona Curve Race – Saturday, May 16th
YMCA July 4th Race – Saturday, July 4th
YMCA Triathlon and Race at Canoe Creek – Saturday, August 1st
YMCA Half Marathon – Saturday, October 10th
YMCA Turkey Trot Race – Saturday, November 28th
YMCA Twilight Race – Wednesday, December 31st
Youth Track & Field!!!
The YMCA has another program that I want to mention at this time – their Youth Track and Field Program. Participants will receive instruction in the different areas of track & field in a non-competitive environment. Proper training techniques like stretching, warm-ups, and cool-downs are stressed.
The kids are divided into three age groups:
2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade
5th and 6th grade, and
Junior High
This program takes place on Saturday mornings from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The schedule is as follows:
Session 1 – March 7th to April 11th
Session 2 – April 18th to May 23rd
