How's this for a special guest?
May 27, 2009 - Neil Rudel
If this wasn't tragic, it would be comical.
The reason I'm posting this is Jayson Williams was friendly with former Penn State Altoona basketball coach Armon Gilliam.
In fact, earlier this decade, around 2004, Williams was Gilliam's guest at a benefit basketball game at Penn State Altoona.
Knowing Williams' background, many of us -- including the PSU Altoona administration -- were shocked at Gilliam's selection, but Williams was trying to right himself and contribute in a positive way to society so the event did go off.
I accompanied Mirror sports correspondent Bob Larson to the interview that night, and, of course, questions on Williams' past and the case itself were off limits.
Gilliam left Penn State Altoona after the 2005 season as he just didn't fit into the small-college coaching arena after a great NBA career.
Bringing Jayson Williams to headline a benefit basketball game was only one reason why.
