One to remember (briefly, anyway)

July 26, 2009 - John Mehno

Tuesday is the eighth anniversary of one of the greatest comebacks in Pirates history.

They were trailing 8-2 with two out and the bases empty against the Houston Astros in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at PNC Park on July 28, 2001.

The seven-run rally was capped by Brian Giles’ grand slam off Billy Wagner for a 9-8 victory.

How much momentum did the stirring victory generate? The Pirates lost the second game of the doubleheader and five of their next six, part of a 5-16 stretch in a 100-loss season.

How they scored: (Mike Jackson pitching) Kevin Young doubled. Pat Meares homered. Adam Hyzdu, batting for Omar Olivares, singled. Tike Redman walked. Jack Wilson singled, Hyzdu scored. (Billy Wagner relieved). Jason Kendall was hit by a pitch. Brian Giles homered, Redman, Wilson and Kendall scored.
