Awaiting the inevitable...
August 17, 2009 - John Mehno
The Pirates have a record of 46-70 as they open a nine-game homestand tonight against Milwaukee.
Tonight's game is their 117th with 45 remaining on the schedule.
It seems like a lock now that they'll lose at least 82, which would give them 17 consecutive losing seasons. That would set a record.
Here's the challenge for you: Pick which game will be the 82nd loss, and you can win a very modest prize.
E-mail me with your guess: Take a look at the schedule and tell me what date you think will bring loss No. 82. In the case of duplicate entries, the first to arrive will be the winner. Keep in mind the Pirates have a day-night doubleheader in Cincinnati on Aug. 31 that does not appear on the original schedules. If the Pirates somehow avoid that 82nd loss, we'll all be surprised.
Let's make the entry deadline Friday, Aug. 21 at noon.
One entry per person, please. Decision of the judges is final. Good luck.
