Finishing up early
December 11, 2009 - John Mehno
There's still a mathematical chance the Steelers could get into the playoffs, but it isn't going to happen.
If you can't beat Oakland and Cleveland, you have no business in playoff-land.
This team has come up with short, and the three games left on the schedule are an inconvenience as they start planning for ways to fix this.
I would be willing to wager there will be changes in the coaching staff. There will be at least two starting jobs vacated on defense (Casey Hampton and Ryan Clark won't be back) and they have an urgent need to upgrade the offensive line and add depth at running back (Willie Parker won't be back).
The quicker they can get started on that, the better. It's obvious this year's team is very atypical for the Steelers. They haven't been expending maximum effort, and it shows. Mike Tomlin issued bold words, and his players didn't back them up.
Use the last three games to evaluate and experiment, then get busy on working toward the 2011 changes.
