In honor/hatred of snow

February 11, 2010 - Keith Frederick
Like most of you, I've shoveled 347 feet of snow in the last week. So I thought I'd put together a short list of snow-related music and offer my thoughts on them. And strictly Christmas songs don't count.

  • "Snow (Hey Oh)" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers - OK, I'm more than a bit biased here, as RHCP are one of my favorite bands of all-time. But this is really a fantastic song and, musically, is unlike just about anything else you'll hear on the radio.

It does lose points, however, for not actually being about snow, the weather. It's really about getting clean and sober, aka "being pure as snow."

  • "Informer" by Snow - Every member of my generation knows this song. Mostly because we don't know this song.

Confused? Let me explain: The lyrics of this one hit wonder by Canadian rapper/reggae artist Snow are roughly transcribed as "Inforrrrmer. Aalksdfiahgoaihtanfaoinanfnawfnawwfa bam. A leaky boom boom dammmmm."

  • "Snowblind" by Black Sabbath - An awesome song by an awesome group. No, they weren't devil worshippers, even if they sometimes used that persona to sell albums. Loses points for actually being about cocaine, but when you're talking about this band in the '70s, is anyone really surprised?

  • "Chasing Cars" by Snow Patrol - You know this song, even if you don't know its name. This is the song that goes, "If I lay here/If I just lay here/Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"

Basically, it's one of the most whiny, irritating songs of the past few years, made even worse because pop radio played it 18 times an hour.

  • "Suzy Snowflake" by Rosemary Clooney - When I take a look outside, I have an idea of what Suzy Snowflake can do with her "snow white gown." And if she comes "Rap, tap, tapping at my window pane," she might get smacked.
  • "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow" most famously by Dean Martin - Again, look outside. What kind of freakin' sadist wrote this song?!

Is this every musical connection to snow? Of course not. Do I care? Of course not.

Anyone have anything to add?

I am looking for:
