My favorite West Central performance
May 19, 2010 - Erik Brown
If you’re a regular reader of Against The Wind, you know that I’m a big fan of the West Central Coaches Track & Field Invitational. It really is one of the best high school track & field meets in the state. With 57 schools represented this year (16 “big” schools and 39 “small” schools), there were plenty of outstanding performances turned in. I can’t do justice to them all. So, if you’ll pardon my obvious bias, I’m going to tell you about my personal favorite.
Girls’ Big School 4 X 800 Relay (all split times are unofficial)
The first leg was fast! Indian Valley led the way, followed closely by Altoona, State College, Derry Area, and then Hollidaysburg in 5th place. Ashley Beyer kept her Lady Golden Tiger teammates in contention with a very solid 2:25+.
As the second leg unfolded, State College moved into the lead, and Hollidaysburg’s Lauren Pheasant worked her way through the lead group to move the Tigers into 2nd place, running a 2:27+.
In the third leg, things got even more exciting for Hollidaysburg fans. Alyssa Beyer caught, and then passed, the State College runner giving the Lady Golden Tigers their first lead of the race with a 2:28+.
When Alexis Preston took the baton for the anchor leg, the Hollidaysburg faithful had to be feeling good about their chances. Although she’s just a sophomore, Preston has consistently turned in strong performances this season. She didn’t disappoint, crossing the line in 2:22+ for her leg and preserving a memorable victory for the Lady Tigers.
When all was said and done, Beyer, Pheasant, Beyer, and Preston had posted a 9:44.35 which smashed their previous season best (and HASD school record) time by an incredible 16 seconds! Afterwards, Hollidaysburg assistant coach Lynnette Luke was heard to say “they rise to the occasion.” They certainly do!
Thanks for reading Against The Wind!
