The Almost Perfect game

June 3, 2010 - John Mehno

Hey, just back from a blog vacation. Good to be here.

The angle that's being overlooked on the almost perfect game by Armando Galarraga of the Detroit Tigers:

If the first baseman stays out of the way and lets the second baseman field the ball, it's a routine play. That means it isn't close and there's no controversy. The first baseman made it a tougher play than it had to be.

Beyond that:

*No, no don't reverse the call based on the replays. That opens a whole other box of issues.

*It was a bad call, but it doesn't mean that Jim Joyce is a bad umpire.

*People who are threatening Joyce and harassing his family are idiots. Perfect game or not, it's still a baseball game.
