What do Dan Rooney, President George H.W. Bush, Bobby Bowden and Kerry Collins remember most about Joe Paterno?
July 7, 2010 - Cory Giger
You've perhaps seen some advertisements on our website and in the newspaper about the Joe Paterno book Neil Rudel and I are writing.
I'm no salesman, and frankly, I hate when pushy salespeople start doing their slimy thing trying to get me to buy something. But I can promise that if you're a Penn State or Paterno fan, you will find this book to be a great read.
It's called "They Know Joe" and comes out in early September, just in time for the start of the season. Click the link to the right for pre-order information, and it also will be available in area bookstores once it's published.
We have spoken to dozens of famous people around the country to find their favorite memories and stories about JoePa. Each one has his or her own chapter, and each chapter is a quick, informative read with a lot of great behind-the-scenes stuff.
There are all kinds of books about Paterno and Penn State football out there. What this book does is tell Joe's story through the eyes of many of his friends, colleagues and former players.
Steelers owner Dan Rooney -- on offering Joe the Steelers job in 1969
President George H.W. Bush -- on his long friendship with Joe
Bobby Bowden -- on the all-time wins race against Joe and recalling when they first met
Lou Holtz -- on Joe always saying he'll coach "four more years"
Kerry Collins -- on the undefeated 1994 season and Joe's nickname for the stars on that team
Michael Robinson -- on the 2005 season and his personal relationship with Joe
Johnny Majors -- on how he didn't want to get to know Joe when he was at Pitt but later became good friends
Other chapters include:
ESPN's John Clayton
Division III coach John Gagliardi, the all-time wins leader with 471 for St. John's (Minn.)
Chip Engle, son of former PSU coach Rip Engle
And many more.
Once the book comes out, Neil and I will be doing a lot of book signing sessions around the state, so be sure to stop by and say hello.
