Nellie King

August 11, 2010 - John Mehno

I got the word this morning that Nellie King had died at 82.

If you're old enough, you remember Nellie as part of the Pirates broadcast team from 1967 until he and Bob Prince were fired after the 1975 season.  I first met Nellie in his last couple of years in the Pirates' booth, and continued to see him after he started a new career at Duquesne University.

I've never known a kinder man. Nellie King never "big leagued" anyone, because that wasn't even in his make-up. He was a great storyteller. As much as I enjoyed his stories -- and his spirited telling of them -- I'll always remember his kindness more than anything.

The last several years were a battle through a variety of health problems. But even as his lanky body grew more frail, Nellie never lost that smile or the twinkle in his eye.

He was a special guy and I was proud to call him a friend.
