PSU-YSU pregame stretch...

September 3, 2010 - Ray Eckenrode

  > We caution those of you in the Robert-Bolden-must-be-an-epic-talent-because-JoePa-is-starting-him-in-his-first-game camp to pop in your tapes of the Blue-White game and refresh your memory about the two guys Bolden beat out.
  > OK, let's get this out of the way: Bolden Beautiful, Beholden Bolden, Bolden Statement, Bolden Nugget, Bolden Days. Headline writers, you get one shot with any of them then pack 'em away.
  > A lot of folks (present company included) were wondering why Evan Royster wasn't voted as Penn State's offensive captain by his teammates. But if this is really his Twitter page, it would explain a lot.
  > If there ever were a textbook definition of "Pot, Kettle" it's PSU and Nebraska fans denigrating each other and their "fading" programs.
  > For as much as we’re all talking about the offense, the play of Penn State’s linebackers and secondary might be the key thing to watch for against YSU.
  > You might remember back in April we snarkily said the score of the Blue-White Game was Alabama 55, Penn State 14. And while the spectre of ‘Bama blowout still looms, IF you were writing a script for a Penn State win it would involve some key Alabama injuries or off-field problems, the emergence of a new Penn State star and a few lucky bounces. Hmmmm.
  > If I were a Pitt fan, I'd still be livid about the pass interference call late in the fourth quarter that extended a Utah possession and resulted in Pitt getting the ball with 2:52 to go instead of about five minutes to go. Just a horrible call and the guy was looking right at it.

The pick
  > Robert Bolden isn’t the only one making his first collegiate start Saturday. Youngstown State has a new coach and a ton of first-year starters. But YSU is a very respectable program and the Penguins don’t figure to be shocked and awed. We can’t imagine JoePa is going to let Bolden throw the ball more than 20 times and with a windy day forecast it might be less than that. We look for a lot of Evan Royster and his supporting backs and a comfortable, though not dominating, win … Penn State 31-13.
