Countdown to kickoff
September 10, 2010 - John Mehno
The Steelers open the season Sunday afternoon. Sports editor Buck Frank and I will be at Heinz Field to bring you slam-bang coverage in Monday's Mirror. I'm guessing one of the Mirror's superstar photographers will be on hand as well.
My forecast for the Steelers? I see them in that 9-7...8-8...7-9 bracket, where the final record depends on breaks and weather and injuries and maybe Jeff Reed's ability to make a field goal at the end. The most obvious obstacle is the quarterback jackpot Ben Roethlisberger created with his ill-advised bar-hopping. Beyond that, I still don't think the offensive line is very good and I have concerns about depth at running back and receiver. I also think the age of the defense is an issue.
So I see the Steelers as competitive, but I don't think they're headed for a standout season. They could make the playoffs, but I won't be surprised if they fall short. I think Cincinnati and Baltimore are both better teams than the Steelers at this point.
We will start finding out about all of this on Sunday.
