MSU-PSU wrapup...

November 27, 2010 - Ray Eckenrode

The headline:

MSU snaps Beaver Stadium hex, shares league title

It was over when:

+ Michigan State tight end Brian Lincthicum snuffed out a furious Penn State fourth-quarter rally by charging forward and putting the clamps on Collin Wagner’s onsides kick attempt on its big bounce and after it traveled only six yards. Great clutch play with less than a minute to go.

Plays of the day:

+ Junior tackle Quinn Barham had a terrible third quarter, giving up on a block that resulted in a sack early in the quarter, then getting called for holding a few series later, pinning PSU at its own 7, heading into the wind, field position that eventually yielded Michigan State’s third, and biggest, touchdown.

Hot topics:

+ Penn State’s defense was weak in the middle again, but the 28 points it held Michigan State to should have been enough to win that game. It was Penn State’s offense that just could not put it all together in the first half, moving the ball but short circuiting with procedure penalties and drops and only putting three points on the board.

+ It still looks like the Gator Bowl for the Nits on New Year’s Day, matched against either Mississippi State or Florida.

Paralysis by analysis:

+ We don’t think the ESPN crew spent enough time talking about Joepa coming back next year. There was a lot of new information to be uncovered there and a lot of things that viewers could learn. In a game like that, you should be prepared with a bunch of inane stats about Joe’s longevity and then work them in at the most awkward of moments. As they say on Twitter: *sarcasm*.

+ These words actually came out of Craig James mouth: “That’s why Derek Moye is considered one of the all-time best around here.”

Zebra hunting:

+ We thought that was one of the better officiated Big Ten games we’ve seen in awhile. Penn State might have caught a break when Devon Still was called for running into the kicker on his dumb first-half penalty instead of roughing.

And now a word from our sponsors :

+ Dear Applebee’s: 1999 called and it wants its Chris Berman commercial back.

+ “You want to be sharp behind the wheel? Take it from a truck driver: Rest often and take Five-Hour Engery.” Um, why do we think he only practices half of what he preaches?

Sweet tweets:

@15MinutesBlog: Matt Cooke thinks that was a dumb penalty by Devon Still.

@QBSneak12: MSU obviously watches film, attacking PSU MLB.

@WisconsinRob: This wouldn’t happen if Joepa was alive.

@CoryGiger: This isn't the same old Sparty. And it's clearly not the same old Penn State. 5 good opponents, 5 bad losses.

@15MinutesBlog: Penn State will be older, smarter and better next year, but how will they get faster?

We were right:

+ We expected a crowd in the 90k vicinity and Penn State’s students held up their part of the bargain, staying away (actually, on break) in droves.

We were wrong:

+ We expected PSU to win another shootout, but it became apparent early that Penn State’s offense wouldn’t be up to the task, shooting itself in the foot numerous times on early promising drives.

I am looking for:
