July 1, 2011 - John Mehno
You may have heard that the Pittsburgh Penguins have an interest in bringing Jaromir Jagr back for the upcoming season.
They may even have signed him by now. Or he may have signed elsewhere. I don't know. I'm probably napping now, or else thinking about something other than hockey on the Fourth of July weekend.
It's a world of instant communication these days, and that's not always a good thing. Jagr is a future Hall of Famer, but he's also soon to be 40 years old. He's at the end of his career. He's now a complementary player on an established team, not a centerpiece. A return to Pittsburgh and the Crosby-Malkin Penguins is a good story, but I can wait until it happens.
People are Tweeting about this every 10 seconds, doling out 140 characters of guesswork. Does anybody benefit from this? The Penguins play their first game in three months. There's time to get all of this nailed down. I'm all for getting the story first, but there first has to be a story.
Whoa....what's that? A baggage handler thinks he just saw Jagr's suitcase? Gotta run!
