October 21, 2011 - John Mehno
I was on the streets of downtown Pittsburgh at the ungodly (for me) hour of 10 a.m., headed to Penguins practice on Friday morning.
Chilly day, misting rain, slate gray skies. As I crossed Wood Street, I happened to glance at the McDonald's and my day instantly changed. What was in the window but a giant picture of the McRib.
Yes, it's back.
McRib is a McDonald's specialty -- you never know when it's going to appear or how long it will stay on the menu. It's a limited availability item, which means you'd better make your sauce-slathered hay while you can. It's a boneless pork patty, drenched in sauce and placed on a hoagie-style bun with pickles and onions added. But that clinical breakdown doesn't come close to explaining why you should go out and but several. The inventor should be nominated for world-wide prizes.
I continued on to practice and did my work there. On the way back, I stopped at Wiener World to get an Italian hoagie to go. Alas, the friendly counterman said he was sold out of hoagies. So I just headed home, tired and disappointed, but buoyed to know the weeks ahead will be filled with McRibby goodness. It takes a lot to get me to stray from the dollar menu or coupon items. McRib does that.
I plan to get a couple of them tomorrow at my neighborhood McDonald's. Welcome back!
