Classes run 1-2:30 p.m. and are most appealing to 7-to-12 year-olds. There is no charge but space is limited so advance registration is required.

JUNK RETHUNK

Participation in the April exhibit is open to anyone who sees artistic possibilities in trash. Whether you call it "recycled," "upcycled," or "re-purposed," one of the most popular and certainly most earth-friendly ways for both professionals and amateurs to create art is to use items that would normally end up in the trash en route to a landfill and find a new, hopefully esthetic use for them. Of course artists, often prone to short or sometimes lifelong periods of poverty, have been upcycling for millennia. Only now it's also a very trendy and "green" thing to do. What's more, it's a morally responsible thing to do.

The British Art critic Lawrence Alloway first coined the term "Junk Culture" to describe mixed-media work that rescues the throw-away products of modern life. Entries to April's Junk Rethunk should be created with Alloway's definition in mind. ... Mike Herncane
