Benefits of Different Shapes and Sizes This Weekend!
March 9, 2012 - Jim Price
This weekend’s live music slate in Altoona and surrounding areas is punctuated by several different benefit concerts, dances and multi-performer events.
The Bellwood Eagles will host a fundraiser for the Blair County Respiratory Disease Society on Saturday afternoon and evening. The “Balls to the Wall” benefit begins at 4 p.m., and will feature a wide variety of sounds. Xs For Eyes kicks it off with high-octane punk rock, followed by the improvisational stylings of Mysterytrain, ska sounds from Gordie B & the Turtletones, and hard classic and modern rock from The Jam and Hot Damn. Donation is $10, and advance tickets are available.
Not too far away, classic rockers Ambush will provide the music at the Bonnie Miller Cancer Benefit, which starts at 7 p.m. Saturday evening at the Hookies Fire Company in Tyrone.
Four area punk and hardcore bands will gather together to help out a fellow musician Saturday night at Aldo’s. Xs For Eyes, The Whatleys, Drain The Sorrow and Revenge Memorial will raise funds to help out Animalhaus lead singer John Barlow, who was injured in a February traffic accident and faces several surgeries. The show begins at 10 p.m., and donation at the door is $5.
And on Sunday afternoon, a number of area bands will donate their talents to help out the surviving family of accident victim Patti Jo Miller at the “A Promise for Patti” Benefit at Pellegrine’s. Miller lost her life in an auto accident while driving to work on January 25. The benefit kicks off at 1 p.m., and will feature performances from The Hawks Blues Band, Mr. Dasch & Harmonica Dave with The Professor, Phil McCaulley, E.V.K., Ambush, Fred Myers and the Redneck Majority, Screamin' Ugly, The Sitch, Lies Inc., Johnny Danger and Fore Day Creep. There will also be a silent auction and T-shirts for sale. Donation at the door is $5.
AnEmergencyScene presents a busy weekend of entertainment for music fans under 21. Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Kevin Devine headlines a Friday show at Altoona’s Masonic Hall, which starts at 6 p.m. Devine has been creating music for more than a decade, has released several albums and EPs, and has toured with such prominent national names as Thrice and Nada Surf. Altoona fans can witness Devine and his band in action before they journey to the prestigious South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas next week. Also performing on this bill will be New Jersey’s The Front Bottoms (who also will showcase at South By Southwest next week), Pittsburgh’s Run, Forever and local solo artists Godfrey Lane and Colleen Casserly.
AnEmergencyScene also presents a seven-band all-ages bill on Saturday evening at the Masonic Hall. Baltimore-based post-hardcore rockers Pianos Become the Teeth will headline the bill, which starts at 5 p.m. Other performers include Louisville, Kentucky-based punk rockers Xerxes, Lancaster’s We Were Skeletons, Boston’s Ghost Thrower (also headed to South By Southwest), Williamsport-based punk rockers Organs, Altoona-turned-Pittsburgh indie rockers Seas We Fear to Sail, and Tyrone-based Becoming Friends With Lions.
It promises to be a busy weekend for music fans of all ages. Pick a show, and give these bands and performers audiences to play for; your support helps to guarantee that more shows and live music continue to happen in our area!
