Bluegrass and a Benefit This Weekend!
March 23, 2012 - Jim Price
This weekend’s live music forecast for area stages calls for a taste of bluegrass and a benefit to help out a youngster battling cancer.
The bluegrass happens Friday night at Pellegrine’s, with a rare Altoona appearance by hometown bluegrass/folk specialists Mama Corn. The group will bring their fresh and lighthearted blend of traditional bluegrass, folk, and grassed-up interpretations of non-bluegrass artists from Pink Floyd to Rob Zombie to Pellegrine’s stage beginning at 9 p.m. Mama Corn is gearing up for a busy spring and summer season, which includes appearances at Kempton’s Spring Blossom Bluegrass Festival in May, the 9th annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival near Renovo and the O.A.T.S. Bluegrass Festival in Benton in June, Bethlehem’s annual Musikfest in early August, and more.
Six area band favorites will converge on Altoona’s 4D’s Lounge this Sunday night to help out a 6-year-old girl recently diagnosed with cancer. Abigail Miller, the daughter of Bryan and Kristen Miller, will undergo 25 weeks of chemotherapy after having a 5-pound tumor and her left kidney removed in January. The bands Bodacious B, Flight 19, Giants Of Science, Slacker Theory, 7th Gear and Xs For Eyes will donate their talents to help raise funds to help Abigail and her family. The concert starts at 6 p.m., and the donation at the door will be $10 per person. The evening will also include prize drawings and a silent auction for items donated by local businesses.
