Rock and Wrasslin' This Weekend!

March 30, 2012 - Jim Price
Area pro-wrestling connoisseurs have had this weekend circled for a while, as this year’s installment of WWE’s annual “WrestleMania” pay-per-view event happens on Sunday evening. While the WWE won’t be anywhere close to the Altoona area this weekend (this year’s event happens in Miami), a rock-and-wrestling connection will happen Saturday night in southern Blair County.

CMW – Champion Midget Wrestling – will bring its action to Glenn’s Place in Claysburg. A traveling promotion, CMW presents cards at nightspot venues throughout the country, consisting of at least four midget wrestlers and a referee. The night will also feature live rock music, courtesy of area favorites Half Tempted and One Brick Shy. Advance tickets are $10 and available at Glenn’s Place.

If you would prefer to see a hoedown over a throwdown on Saturday night, a special fundraiser for Dreams Go On will take place at Altoona’s UVA Club. The “Spring Hoedown” will start at 7 p.m., and feature music from local modern bluegrass group Mama Corn, followed by deejay Tim Kelly. The event will feature a throwdown of sorts, as local pizza places will compete in a “Throwdown at the Hoedown,” with audience members sampling and voting for their favorite pizza. The proceeds benefit Dreams Go On, which provides therapeutic horseback riding to children and adults recovering from illnesses, injuries or debilitating conditions.

A band that specialized in musical throwdowns during their initial run on area stages will reunite onstage at Aldo's this Saturday night. The Clearfield-based rock group 969 will reprise their volatile and raging style of hardcore and metal music, with special guests Drain The Sorrow and Xs For Eyes. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, 969 was one of the staples of the Clearfield area punk/hardcore scene, and toured throughout the northeast. The lineup of lead vocalist Frank Rumfola, bassist Ed McDonald, guitarist Ken Wagner and drummer Justin Strickland are reuniting briefly, before Strickland tours this summer with his longtime hardcore project Not Without Resistance.

And if you are a fan of ‘80s hair bands, one of the prominent names of that era will be performing an all ages show Sunday night at Club Squared in Philipsburg. L.A. Guns – featuring singer/guitarist Phil Lewis, drummer Steve Riley, guitarist Stacey Blades and drummer Scotty Griffin – will perform their best-known tunes and some new material. State College modern rockers Sylex will open the show. The doors open at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are $12; admission at the door is $15.
