Get Your Motor Running This Weekend!
June 22, 2012 - Jim Price
If you are a motorcycle enthusiast, you’ve likely had this weekend circled on the calendar for months. Thunder In The Valley, Johnstown’s annual motorcycle rally, takes place this weekend. And numerous other events held in conjunction with Thunder also happen at various locations surrounding Johnstown.
Obviously, the main focus is on motorcycles, with many different motorcycle-related activities, rides, presentations, vendors and much more to check out. But live music is a big part of Thunder weekend as well, with many bands and performers playing not just at Thunder In The Valley, but the other associated events as well: Cambria County Bikefest at the Cambria County Fairgrounds, Windber Rumbles at Windber Stadium, Pool & Pork at the Nanty Glo Park and Pool, and Thunder on the Knob at Blue Knob Ski Resort.
Some of the highlights of the Thunder-related musical entertainment include The Nighthawks (who played on Thursday) and New Riders of the Purple Sage at Thunder In the Valley, Hazen A.B.A.T.E. party favorite Mason Dixon at Madhatters in St. Boniface on Saturday night, and Pittsburgh-based southern rock performers Sour Mash at Cambria County Bikefest on Saturday night.
In other noteworthy live music happenings this weekend, the downtown Altoona “Summer Sounds” concert series resumes Friday night at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza with The Santone Orchestra performing big band era sounds. The music begins at 7 p.m., and admission is free. And downtown Bedford comes alive with music and art both Saturday and Sunday with "Arts on the Square," presented by the Bedford County Arts Council. This event will feature various art displays, live music, food, classic films and more. Admission is free.
