Get Your Wings!
July 6, 2012 - Jim Price
Outdoor chicken wing season is upon us. Several popular area summertime events that center around the consumption of chicken wings start up in the next couple of weeks.
Thursdays will now feature two such events. The Pennsylvania American Legion 21st District Wing Festival will make its debut this Thursday evening, July 12, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hollidaysburg’s Legion Park. Admission will be free. Wing vendors from various area taverns and eateries will be selling wings of different flavors. Live music will be provided by Felix & the Hurricanes.
Meanwhile, Lakemont Park will present their Wing Off event Thursdays from 5 to 10 p.m., again presenting a variety of wing flavors from area vendors plus live music. Admission to the Park is $5, which includes rides, the Water Park and Wing Off. Entertaining at the first Wing Off on Thursday will be The Kick at 5 p.m. and Inside Out (featuring members of Kyx) at 6 p.m.
For out of town wing enjoyment, the Conemaugh Township Fire Company presents their annual Wing Blast event beginning this Saturday at Greenhouse Park near Johnstown. The event runs from 6 to 11 p.m., and will take place each Saturday evening during July. The Michael O’Brian Band entertains the Wing Blast crowd this Saturday; and bands for the remaining three Wing Blasts include Wyld Syde on July 14, Inside Out (Johnstown band) on July 21, and Octane on July 28.
And starting on Thursday, July 19, Tussey Mountain presents their WingFest event, which will take place Thursday evenings from 5 to 10 p.m. through August 30 at the amphitheater. Admission is $5, with children 12 and under admitted free. The band Lowjack entertains at the first WingFest event on July 19.
Besides wing events, Arts Festival week kicks off Wednesday with Children’s Day at the 46th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in downtown State College, and on Thursday, the 20th annual People’s Choice Festival begins in Boalsburg. Check both festivals' website links elsewhere on this blog to see the performance schedules for these events.
Also, the Philipsburg Heritage Days celebration kicks off this Tuesday, July 10, and runs through July 15; featuring a variety of activities, live music and more.
Needless to say, there is a lot to see and do in the coming week if you are a music fan. So pick some shows, and show your support for live music!
