O'Rourke: The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn.
The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it. Paintings by ~ MERRILL SMITH ~
August 29-September 29
Smith began as a self-taught "pencil, pen and ink kind of guy." But that all changed when he attended five workshops taught by professional artists. "I had never tried oils before and this was my only formal training with them. Now I hardly ever do pencil, pen and ink-why go back to a black and white TV when you have color?"
"Rembrandt's work always fascinated me because his objects seem to come out of the darkness and into the light. It was like playing with a flashlight as a kid-everything was nothing in darkness until I put a light on it and it then turned into something." Many pieces in the show, both landscapes and still lifes, reflect that fascination. "I am always discovering new techniques and styles to try. It is always a learning experience on the move, joyful frustration."
Please come meet the artist at a reception 1-3 p.m. Sunday, September 9.
