The Last of The Next...

January 25, 2013 - Jim Price
If you haven’t yet checked out former American Idol contestant Tyler Grady and his Philadelphia-based rock band The Next, you have one final chance to do so this weekend. The group in its present form is bidding farewell.

Grady, who was a Top 24 finalist on American Idol, will depart The Next after their final show this Saturday night at the 4D’s Lounge. He is reportedly pursuing career opportunities beyond music, including acting and theatrical endeavors. The remaining members of The Next – guitarist Jordan Demarest, bassist Joe Berndt and drummer Anthony Baker – will team with former Steamroller Picnic singer Paul Mullay in a subsequent new band project called Alien Arcade. This project will make its official debut on February 2, and will take over The Next’s remaining show dates; including some at the 4D’s Lounge.

The Next’s swan song performance is one of several noteworthy events happening on area stages this weekend and upcoming week. State College’s historic State Theatre will stage “BeCAUSE The Night: A Celebration of Women in Rock” this Saturday night. The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m., and proceeds from the event will benefit Easter Seals of Central Pennsylvania and the State Theatre. The concert will showcase a wide assortment of area musicians performing song material from female rock artists. Performers slated to perform include Grain, Pure Cane Sugar, Hannah Bingman, Jason McIntyre & Junior Tutwiler, Ginger Woolridge, Erin Condo & the Hoofties, Ted McCloskey & the Hi Fi’s, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band, Hot Mamas, Jerry Zolten & Richard Sleigh and The Nightcrawlers. Some surprise performers may appear as well.

For fans of heavier rock and metal, there is some bad and good news to report, both regarding shows at Aldo’s this weekend. Due to the inclement wintry weather and bad road conditions, Friday’s scheduled triple-bill featuring 10 Million Devils, Where The Truth Lies and Blood Union has been cancelled. The good news is that renowned northeastern Pennsylvania-based hardcore band Wisdom In Chains will return to Aldo’s on Saturday night, headlining a triple-bill that also includes Xs For Eyes and Railroad City Murder Machines.

For country fans, local country favorites Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs will perform at Champs Sports Bar this Saturday night. Formed a year ago as a side project featuring members from Hello, Vixen and Channel 5 News Team, Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs has become hugely popular on area stages with the co-ed sibling singing duo of Mark and Jill Simanski. The group does a wide variety of modern country, spanning male and female country favorites.

For blues fans, a roadtrip to Northern Cambria’s City Hotel on Saturday night may be in order, as Indiana County-based blues rockers the Juke House Bombers take the stage. Formed from the remnants of shelved blues project Four Day Crawl, the Juke House Bombers feature the father-and-son tandem of Jimmy and Joe Roach on guitars and vocals. The group performs a variety of hard electric blues and classic rock, with an emphasis on gritty vocals and scorching guitar work. Expect to hear electric blues from Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Willie Dixon and others, as well as classic rock from Cream, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Molly Hatchet and more.

And an Altoona area acoustic trio marks their first anniversary as a band with a dual-purpose celebration next Thursday night. Formed in late January of last year, the Backyard Rockers will celebrate their first year together with a show and party at Pellegrine’s. Besides celebrating their first year, the group will also celebrate harmonica player “Harmonica Dave” Baird’s forthcoming 60th birthday in early February.

Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
