The Super Weekend
February 1, 2013 - Jim Price
Rumor has it that there is some sort of big football game happening this weekend, sometime on Sunday evening. Before you plop down in front of the tube to root against either Ray Lewis getting another ring or the 49ers tying the Steelers for Super Bowl wins, get fired up with some of the excellent live local music taking place on area stages this weekend!
Among some of the pre-game live music action, Aldo’s hosts a lively triple band bill this Friday night, featuring State College punk rock upstarts The Whatleys, the over-the-top rock’n’roll stylings of the Rik Golden Band, and the punk-infused modern rock sounds of Stereo Frenzy. All three bands have distinctive styles and sounds, and should make for an exciting show from start to finish.
On Saturday night, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band bring their grooves back into the Belmar Hotel. The last time this group entertained at the Belmar, on the Sunday night before New Years Eve, they were joined onstage by Chris Vipond’s and Mike Stanley’s former Neogumbo bandmate Paul Johnson on guitar. The musical grooves were punchy and nonstop, and the Belmar dance floor stayed busy for the entire night.
Also Saturday night, Happy Valley party favorites Total Whiteout returns to the stage of the 4D’s Lounge. This group has been steadily winning legions of dance floor fans throughout the state with their potent, high-energy modern pop/rock show.
And regardless of whether Ray Lewis gets that last Super Bowl ring or the 49ers tie the Steelers’ record six Super Bowl wins, you can bring your sorrows to Shaw’s Bar, where the Sunday night lineup of Felix & the Hurricanes will provide the postgame relief. With singer Steve Oswalt and bassist Joe George joining the Hurricanes core of guitarist/singer Felix Kos and drummer Bob Watters, this edition of the Hurricanes has been exploring new sounds and expanding their repertoire. Lately, this edition of the Hurricanes has been performing songs from such previously unlikely Hurricanes terrain as Alice In Chains, Loverboy, Shinedown, Chickenfoot and Radiohead. And they also have been breaking out classic rock deep cuts from names like Deep Purple, Montrose, Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath and more.
Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
