Friends with Benefits...
February 15, 2013 - Jim Price
Several benefit concerts highlight live music happenings on area stages this weekend and upcoming week.
On Saturday evening, the Neighbor Helping Neighbor benefit will raise money to help out Todd Vallei, who was injured in a motorcycle accident last September. Taking place at the Bavarian Hall, this benefit will start at 6 p.m., and will feature dinner served by Fat Daddy’s, door prizes and a Chinese auction, and live music from area acoustic favorites Born & the Beanstalk and The House Band. Tickets are $15 per person, or $25 per couple.
Another benefit concert on Sunday will raise money and remember a recent auto accident victim. The benefit for Jordan Graham will take place at 30 Something, and raise funds to help with funeral expenses for Graham, who died in a vehicle accident on February 8. The concert will start at 3 p.m., and feature music from the bands Zombies With Guns, Aunt Lisa’s Bone, Black Sun, Assault Method and Deadbeat Stew. A BC Rich Warbeast guitar – donated by DTM Productions and the Cryptic Cellar – will also be raffled off.
And a benefit to help out some newly unemployed members of the community will take place at Pellegrine’s on Sunday afternoon and evening. The Great Big Bash for the Hooters Girls will feature live music, plus wait service from several former Hooters Girls who found themselves out of work when the Altoona Hooters restaurant suddenly closed its doors earlier this month. This benefit will start at 4 p.m., and feature music from the Beatlemaniacs, Backlash, Apollocreed, Rich Edmundson and more.
And if you want to learn about the music industry, a road trip to the state capitol may be in order this weekend. The 17th annual Millennium Music Conference will take place Friday and Saturday at the Radisson Penn Harris Convention Center in Camp Hill. Millennium will feature panels, seminars and keynote speakers involving all aspects of the music industry; including record labels, artist management, marketing and promotion, the internet, copyrights and royalties, songwriting and publishing, and much more. Along with the daytime conference and trade show, nearly 300 different bands and artists – some from as far away as Greece and Kuwait – will showcase their music and talents in various venues throughout the Harrisburg area. The Millennium Music Conference provides information and networking opportunities for bands and musicians; one band whose first exposure to the music industry happened at the 1999 Millennium Music Conference just won their first Grammy Award last weekend. Their name is Halestorm.
Check back to “Backyard Beats” for recaps and updates from the Millennium Music Conference this weekend.
Support live music this weekend! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
