All rise for the Governor!
May 18, 2013 - Neil Rudel
A little late, but I've still got time to alert the half-dozen horse racing fans of this blog my Preakness pick.
I've consulted my expert/dad (Dave Rudel), whose Derby reach of Normandy Invasion made a strong showing, and he likes Governor Charlie.
My dad's had his hands a little full lately so he reached out to a cousin, Morris Rosen, to solidify his suspicion. Rosen, whose father (Uncle Herb) spent the last 20-plus years of his life going to Gulfstream or Calder in Florida twice a week -- "Mondays and Wednesdays," Uncle Herb would announce -- so Morris' roots run deep.
"You can't go wrong with a [Bob] Baffort horse," he said.
My dad quickly passed that information along in time for post time -- an hour from my own post time (5:25 Saturday as we speak).
Of course, Derby winner Orb is the prohibitive favorite, but you don't need us to pick Orb. That's why you're getting Governor Charlie, a 10-1 shot in the nine-horse field that is expected to see a muddy track. Five other horses, including Orb, are lower odds and only two are higher.
Meanwhile, and this could be an omen, when Dad's pick was relayed to wannabe local guru Larry McAleer, he had the same pick.
"Oh, boy," McAleer deadpanned.
Karma or doom? Stay tuned.
1. Orb 4-5
2. Goldencents 8-1
3. Titletown Five 16-1

5. Mylute 8-1
6. Oxbow 14-1
7. Will Take Charge 9-1
8. Govenor Charlie 10-1
