It's Hurricanes Season!
July 19, 2013 - Jim Price
With the warm, tropical weather conditions currently impacting our region comes a reminder that it is now hurricane season as well. And Hurricanes will be impacting stages throughout the area music scene this weekend and upcoming week.
First, Felix & the Hurricanes blow into downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza on Friday evening for the next installment of the “Summer Sounds” concert series. The festivities start at 6 p.m.; admission is free, and food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Next, Hurricanes conditions will kick up on Saturday evening on Lake Raystown, as Felix Kos and company host a Blues Cruise aboard the Proud Mary riverboat. The cruise itself starts at 8 p.m., but pre-cruise festivities start at 3 p.m., including food and refreshments under Pavilion #2. Tickets are $35 and are required to attend this event, and ticket supplies are limited. On Sunday night, Juniata gets hit with its weekly musical storm as the Hurricanes’ Sunday roster of Felix, drummer Bob Watters, singer Steve Oswalt and bassist Joe George bring rocking favorites to Shaw’s Bar starting at 10:30 p.m., no cover. And the Hurricanes will come ashore in the railyard at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum for the next WingDay Wednesday event Wednesday evening starting at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, and wings and beverages will be available for purchase.
Other forces will invade the area music scene this weekend as well, including former Misfits frontman Michale Graves, making another visit to Aldo’s on Friday night. This will be a one-of-a-kind appearance, and the kickoff to Graves’ “Lost Skeleton Returns” tour. Donning his legendary “skele-crow” attire for the first time in eight years, Graves and his band will perform many of his legendary Misfits hits, and introduce some new song material from his forthcoming new horror rock album “Lost Skeleton Returns.” Area punk and punk-driven rock stalwarts The Whatleys, Xs for Eyes and Railroad City Murder Machines will provide warm up for Graves’ finale. Admission is $10, and the show starts at 10 p.m.
Baltimore-based “sleez” rockers King Belvedere will visit Pellegrine’s on Friday night, sharing a double-bill with local hard rockers Lies, Inc. Named after the vodka brand being consumed at the time of their formation in 2004, King Belvedere’s style of hard-driving, wild rock’n’roll has helped them to become one of Charm City’s most popular bands. King Belvedere and Lies, Inc. will also share the stage on Saturday night a little further away, at Wolfie’s in Indiana.
There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
