August 9, 2013 - Jim Price
More festivals and special events continue to punctuate the late summer live music slate, with several happening this weekend.
The wilds of southern Bedford County come alive with music this weekend with the annual Wills Mountain Festival. From Friday through Sunday, 39 different bands and artists will perform on two stages, and play a wide variety of music; spanning folk and bluegrass to funk, jam music and rock. The event takes place at the base of Wills Mountain, at Fort Royale Farm. The music begins at 11 a.m. each day. Tickets are available for the weekend at $75 at the gate. For Sunday’s bluegrass-themed day, tickets at the gate will be $25.
Also taking place this year is the annual Portage Summerfest at Crichton-McCormick Park. Again happening in the second weekend of August, Summerfest will feature food, refreshments, children’s activities, arts and crafts, and live music from Friday night through Sunday afternoon. Some of the weekend’s musical highlights include Neil Diamond impersonator Tom Sadge on Saturday evening, and The Conniptions with Johnny Angel & the Halos on Sunday night. Fireworks will also take place on Saturday evening.
Altoona outdoor stages will be busy this weekend as well. State College-based jazz group Quintessence will perform at Heritage Plaza on Friday evening in the latest installment of the Summer Sounds Concert Series. The festivities begin at 6 p.m., and admission is free.
The Alive @ Five Summer Concert Series at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum concludes on Saturday night with the annual series appearance by Pittsburgh favorites The Clarks, with local country favorites Pistol Peg & the Beer Kegs opening. The Clarks are expected to preview material from their forthcoming new studio album, "Feathers & Bones." The music begins at 6 p.m.
And free concerts wrap up the weekend on Sunday evening at Altoona’s Valley View County Park and Hollidaysburg’s Canal Basin Park. Your Dad’s Friends perform their wide variety of vintage rock’n’roll from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s on the Valley View Park stage beginning at 6 p.m. Fresh off of performing at Bethlehem’s prestigious Musikfest, the Daisy Jug Band will perform a mix of Americana and popular rock’n’roll sounds at Canal Basin Park starting at 6 p.m.
There are lots of performers and shows to check out, so support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
