Jayke Orvis and Rosco Bandana Return

December 6, 2013 - Jim Price
Although the weather outside may be frightful to start this weekend, the music inside on area stages should be delightful for a variety of musical tastes.

For fans of bluegrass, folk and Americana sounds, Aldo’s has noteworthy acts performing both Friday and Saturday night. On Friday night, Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band will return to Aldo’s stage to demonstrate their fiery brand of dark-edged bluegrass and folk sounds. This Pittsburgh-based group sent jaws dropping to the floor when they opened for Nashville Pussy during their first Aldo’s visit in October. Namesake, singer and mandolinist Jayke Orvis (who is also a member of Cincinnati-based Goddam Gallows, also recently performing at Aldo’s), guitarist/singer James Hunnicutt, upright bass player Jared McGovern and fiddler Liz Sloan demonstrated rapid fire execution and precision on songs that intensified as the group proceeded.

And on Saturday night, Mississippi-based country/folk/Americana performers Rosco Bandana return to Aldo’s. Featured on CMT, this group amazed onlookers during their first visit to Aldo’s in late September with their fresh, rustic sound and an enthusiastic and energetic stage show. Solo performer Rogan Allan will open the show.

Some worthy up and coming bands will be on display this weekend as well. This Albatross will make their first appearance on the stage at the 4D’s Lounge on Saturday night, as they open for popular party band Giants Of Science. The focal point of This Albatross is singer Autumn Shiffler, who displays a clear and powerful voice up front. Flanking her are former Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band guitarist Phil Wagner, former Neogumbo guitarist Paul Johnson, Mike Stanley on bass and Les Beatty on drums. This Albatross performs a variety of female-led rock, pop and country favorites, and they are known to pull out surprises as well, such as Triumph’s “Magic Power.”

Fans of southern rock might wish to consider Johnstown’s Bite the Bullet, who visit Magoo’s in Cresson on Saturday night. Now featuring former Locked and Loaded guitarist Brad Lego, Bite the Bullet specializes in southern rock sounds from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Outlaws, ZZ Top and more.

With a wintry weather forecast for Friday night, music fans may wish to call area venues ahead of time to make sure shows are still taking place. Support live music this weekend and upcoming week! And if you plan to celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a driver or call a cab!
