A Special Gathering

April 20, 2007 - Jim Price

Every month, Calvary Baptist Church in Altoona hosts The Gathering Coffeehouse, an outreach ministry established by local Christian rock group The Red Letter Band.

This month’s Gathering, held this Friday evening, April 20, from 7 to 9 PM, will be a little more special.  Besides featuring The Red Letter Band, the event will also feature “Rock For The Troops,” the ongoing initiative by area musicians to videotape greetings and expressions of appreciation for local troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Those attending The Gathering can have their own special greetings for the troops recorded and compiled onto DVD’s to be sent overseas to local Armed Forces units.

This should further elevate the inspirational mood generated by The Red Letter Band and their uplifting brand of music.  Formed in Hollidaysburg two years ago, The Red Letter Band has appeared at various churches, block parties, benefits, revivals and youth events throughout the area.  Last month, the group opened for the national Christian band Casting Pearls during their concert at Altoona Area High School.

The Red Letter Band currently features Jeff Ritchey on vocals and harmonica, Gary Yantz and Larry Snowberger on guitars, Tim Boland on keys, T.J. Simendinger on bass, and Russ Reihart on drums.

Their sound is an energetic and upbeat blend of acoustic, electric guitar and keyboard powered rock, with an emphasis on strong, clear and majestic vocals and bright, lush vocal harmonies.  The Red Letter Band performs original songs and covers from other Christian music artists, including songs from their debut CD, The Adam Project, which was released last year.

Admission is free to The Gathering Coffeehouse, and the public is welcome to attend.  Free coffee, other beverages and snacks will be available.
