Walbeck returning; Potesta out

September 27, 2009

The person calling the shots on the field for the Curve will return next season, but the one calling the games on the radio will not. Manager Matt Walbeck is expected to return to the team in 2010, the Pirates confirmed. Radio broadcaster Ron Potesta, however, will not be retained by the Curve after serving as the play-by-play man for one season. Potesta, who entertained fans with his Harry Caray impression singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” at Blair County Ballpark, did not return a phone message Saturday seeking comment. “Ron is a good broadcaster and a good person, and we sincerely wish him well,” Curve general manager Rob Egan said. Egan did not divulge exactly why Potesta was let go, though his remarks hinted the team needs more out of its broadcaster than Potesta provided. “In our situation, with the media coverage the team receives and the expectations we have on the sales side, our lead broadcaster needs to play a key role in all of those.
