Geist was named a director of the Pennsylvania High Speed Intercity Rail Passenger Commission. James M. Shafer, 72, Altoona, a retired Altoona Mirror photographer with 51 years of service, died Aug. 4. 10 YEARS AGO August 6, 1998 The Pennsylvania House formed a commmittee to investigate the actions of the State Game Commission, based partly on complaints from seven Altoona hunters who said they were "detained and harassed." U.S. Coast Guard Commandant James M. Loy, a native of Altoona, spoke to a joint meeting of the Altoona Council of Navy League and Kiwanis Club.
