LORETTO — Motivation played a part in Central’s latest District 6, Class AAA boys basketball championship.
Dragon coach Reggie Nevins said several comments made by Lewistown, not to mention the Panthers’ full-court pressing with a 20-point lead in the final two minutes of their last meeting, fueled his team’s incentive.
“We were really ready to play,’’ Nevins said after a thrilling finish capped Central’s 72-70 victory Friday night. “Our guys didn’t feel they got a lot of respect from Lewistown this year.’’
After the Panthers beat Central by three points in Martinsburg, Nevins said there was an article in the Lewistown Sentinel saying the victory was never in doubt. The Dragons, he said, were also referred to as “a one-man team (Ben Bithell).’’
“That bothered our guys,’’ Nevins said.
So did Lewistown pressing near the end of a lopsided victory earlier this season during a Mountain League game.
“I purposely called a timeout when that was happening,’’ Nevins said. “We said then and several times since that Lewistown was going to have to answer for that.’’
