Say no to turbines

POSTED: December 10, 2008

A Gamesa representative recently claimed that its industrial wind plant sites are selected with ecological concerns in mind.

If this is true, why was Gamesa not aware of the golden eagle transmitter study in the Alleghenies on going for more than a year?

There is a Web site available for anyone to view that details flights of golden eagles with transmitters at www.aviary.org /cons/track_geagle.php. A simple Web search would lead one to this Web site.

I believe that Gamesa uses research that only benefits its projects, not comprehensive studies.

If that claim about selecting sites with ecological concerns in mind was true, Gamesa would have eliminated Ice Mountain, near Tyrone, as a potential wind plant location long ago.

Ice Mountain is certified as a Blair County Natural Heritage Area and received that certification five years ago in the Blair County Natural Heritage Inventory conducted under the direction of the Blair County Planning Commission and approved by the Blair County commissioners.

Not only is Ice Mountain a certified natural heritage area, but it also is described in the inventory as unique and of exceptional conservation value.

Ice Mountain received the highest possible rating in this study and was the only site in western Blair County to receive this distinction.

Because of the high ecological value of Ice Mountain, the Blair County Natural Heritage Inventory recommended that there be no additional development on the mountain and specifically recommended that no additional roads be built because of the adverse effects that such fragmentation would have on Ice Mountain's unique ecosystem.

Furthermore, at a Tyrone Borough Council meeting, researchers from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the National Aviary, Lafeyette College and Penn State University presented evidence that Ice Mountain is of extreme importance to migrating and wintering golden eagles.

The researchers specifically stated that an industrial wind plant on Ice Mountain would impact golden eagles adversely, as described in a recent Mirror article.

Since Gamesa has chosen to ignore or dismiss the scientific evidence of Ice Mountain's ecological value, I ask that each Tyrone Borough Council member vote no to Gamesa's proposal to convert Ice Mountain into an industrial wind plant.

Terry Wentz

Juniata Valley Audubon President

Below is a table of government subsidy rates for various forms of electricity generation. Check out how much windplants get compared to other forms of electricity generation:

Coal is paid $.44 per mwh Nat. Gas: $.25 per mwh Biomass: $.89 per mwh Nuclear: $1.59 per mwh Hydro: $.67 per mwh Solar: $24.34 per mwh Landfill gas: $1.37 per mwh Wind: $23.37 per mwh

Your tax dollars getting transferred to Gamesa

Dieghl is absolutely correct. Wind power is a total sham. So I suppose those of you who have responded in support of it are okay with your taxes being spent on something that doesn't work.

No nuclear power, no fossil fuels, no wind power, no off shore drilling. This is the mytical global warming nightmare to come. But don't worry, Hussein will fix everything; and if you beleive that I have a nice piece of Manhatten real estate for sale.

Cresson Boy;

You repeatedly refer to Blair County residents as "hillbillies" and you refer to Altoona/Blair County as "The West Virginia of PA."

Blair Countians value their natural heritage. That's why the Blair County Commissioners voted to have the Blair County Natural Heritage Inventory done. The Blair County Natural Heritage Inventory gave Ice Mountain the highest possible rating of ecological value: Ice Mountain is designated as a Blair County Natural Heritage Area. It is further described in the Blair County Natural Heritage Inventory as being UNIQUE and OF EXCEPTIONAL CONSERVATION VALUE. Please read Mr. Wentz's letter. Then explain why you believe it is necessary to convert Ice Mountain into an industrial windplant. 25 industrial-scale turbines are proposed for Ice Mountain. They will provide less than 1% of the amount of electricity produced by the Bruce Mansfield coal plant or the Limerick nuclear plant.

You need 6,000 industrial-scale wind turbines to produce as much electricity as ONE nuclear plant. PA has 5 nuclear plants. PA gets about 40% of its electricity from nuclear plants. France gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear plants and recycles all its nuclear waste. Finland and Sweden and Japan get 70% of their electricity from nuclear plants. Vermont, the green state, gets 80% of its electricity from nuclear plants.

In PA, the nuclear plant at Berwick is adding a reactor. The new reactor will provide as much electricity as 2,000 industrial-scale wind turbines.

PA needs to expand its nuclear capacity. There's no way that we could build enough industrial-scale turbines to have the same amount of electricity that nuclear plants offer.

Everyone should know that the blight on our ridges in the form of these unsightly wind turbines began at Saint Francis University. This institution brought Gamesa into our area and is the secret player behind the scenes. Now that so many have seen how these turbines destroy the natural beauty of our area, the powers that be at SFU have gone underground on this allowing Gamesa to take all the heat. SFU was the catalyst and they should not escape the ire of everyone that detests what these turines are doing to our countryside.

Wind energy is a total sham. You would be better off extracting methane from the southern end of a cow Cressonboy. Open a book.

C-boy,

Did your elementary school cancel classes today because of the weather?

old 97,

You are avoiding the issue, as usual.

The question is: do you want a coal fired plant in your backyard?

The demand for electricity continues to grow. That demand will have to be met by new generation plants. Coal, nuke, GTG, or alternative energy plants will have to be built. Right now, wind is the best option, but NIMBYs like you want to stop progress.

You hillbillies need to understand: you can't watch Jerry Springer on a kerosene powerd TV.

If you don't want wind power then you have to live with the consequences of your choice. Those consequenses include mercury pollution from coal palnts and 10,000 years of poison from nukes.

So, if you don't want wind power then butch up and have a coal plant in your backyard.

Or, are you an environmental racist that only wants those types of stations built in "poorer" areas. (Although it would be hard to find a poorer area than Altoona, The West Virginia of Pennsylvania.)

Cresson Boy;

So far, nothing you say has corresponded with anything Mr. Wentz or I have said. Mr. Wentz is talking about why a specific locale is unsuitable for development. He makes no judgement regarding windplants.

You didn't answer my questions regarding the numbers of turbines needed to produce a given amount of electricity, so you may not know the answer.

PA gets 50% of its electricity from coal plants. You would need 20,000 industrial-scale wind turbines to provide that much electricity.

PA gets 35% of its electicity from just 5 nuclear plants. To produce as much electricity as just ONE nuclear plant, you'd need 6,000 industrial-scale wind turbines.

So, neon, you're OK with a coal plant in your backyard. That's good to know. The company I work for is looking to site one in PA.

I'll have our developer contact you through the Mirror.

You are doing a great thing for the economic future of "The West Virginia of Pennsylvania", Altoona.

I know that we're talking about Ice Mountain which is designated as a Blair County Natural Heritage Area. You seem to be talking in generalities about wind energy, while Mr. Wentz is talking about why a specific locale is unsuitable for development.

Pennsylvania has 30+ coal-fired plants. Please tell me how many industrial wind turbines will be needed to produce as much electricity as half of those plants.

Please tell me how many inustrial-scale turbines would be needed to produce as much electricity as one of PA's 5 nuclear plants.

old 97,

We aren't talking about Prince Gallitzin State Park.

Try to keep up.

Cresson Boy and LetsGoPens;

So, if someone's opposed to covering Prince Gallitzin State Park with solar panels, then that means that he is opposed to alternative energy?

LetsGoPens
12-10-08 2:08 PM
Probably one of the same ones complaining about finding alternative energy

CressonBoy
12-10-08 1:05 PM
OK, Mr. Wentz, how about I build a coal fired plant in your back yard to provide you and your hillbilly neighbors with power?

If a place like Ice Mountain, which has the highest possible rating of ecological significance of any site in Blair County, can't be spared, then we'll soon see every ridgetop in Blair County covered with wind turbines. You said it all, Terry!
