Hospital honors volunteers

TYRONE Members of the Tyrone Hospital family gathered to honor hospital volunteers during a recognition event that was held as a kickoff for National Hospital Week and National Nurses Week in early May. "We are pleased to have members of the community involved in the hospital, helping us fulfill our healing mission," said Stephen Gildea, chief executive officer at the hospital. "They are a very dedicated group of people and they support Tyrone Hospital in a very special way."

In 2009, the following volunteers donated 892 hours to support the hospital:

n Frances Hunter of Tyrone donated 46 hours. A volunteer for more than 20 years, she has donated a total of 10,423 hours. Hunter assists in the materials management department. She is a retired hospital employee. Hunter is also an active member of the hospital auxiliary. n Constance Baker of Tipton donated 197 hours. A volunteer for more than six years, she has donated a total of 1,181 hours. Baker assists on the short procedure unit.

n Anna Mae Campbell of Tyrone donated 116 hours. A volunteer for more than six years, she has donated a total of 930 hours. Campbell assists in the marketing office and with special projects for the Development Council.

n Delores Patton of Tyrone donated 13 hours. She assisted in materials management.

Special recognition was extended to Jack Swiderski, who recently retired from the volunteer program after more than 19 years of service.

In 2009, Swiderski donated 286 hours. He has donated a total of 4,144 hours. Swiderski assisted in nutrition services. He is also a past member of the hospital's board of directors. The hospital also recognized and welcomed new volunteers: Merle Ammerman of Tyrone, who is now assisting with clerical tasks at the Keystone Headache and Pain Management Center at Tyrone Hospital; Terri Lynn Shultz of Tyrone, who is assisting in the laboratory; and Shirley Good of Tyrone, who will be helping in nutrition services.

Several students also volunteered at Tyrone Hospital during 2009.

Students from Grier School assisted in the nursing department during the spring semester. These students collectively donated 118 hours. The students are Ashley Zhang, Summer Zhou, Judy Ruoxi, Christa Ritchie, Lu Yi, Rianna Li, Linda Li, Jun Lee, Na Kung Lee, Christina Keane, Sylvia DeClercq and Angela Jeong. Ocean Ou Chen and Lindsay Hong Seoyeon of Grier School volunteered during the spring semester of 2010. Students from Bishop Guilfoyle High School helped in various departments during the summer of 2009. Alyson Eck donated 56 hours and Jasmine Alocillo donated 14.5 hours.
