UNIVERSITY?PARK - Penn State's latest recruiting class stocks up on frontcourt players with the team losing its starting frontline after this season.
The team said Wednesday they received letters of intent for the 2011-12 season from a pair of 6-foot-11 players in Patrick Ackerman, of Rutland, Mass., and Peter Alexis of Wilkes-Barre.
Coach Ed DeChellis' tallest current player is 6-foot-10 senior forward Andrew Jones. Fellow starting forwards Jeff Brooks and David Jackson are also seniors.
Penn State also received letters of intent Wednesday from 6-foot-8 forward Ross Travis of Chaska, Minn., and 6-foot-1 guard Trey Lewis of Garfield, Heights, Ohio.
Lady Lions get their center
UNIVERSITY PARK - Penn State women's basketball coach Coquese Washington announced Wednesday that Tori Waldner has signed a national letter of intent to play of the Lady Lions for the 2011-12 season.
The 6-foot-5 center from Milton High School in Georgia signed her letter Wednesday morning in a ceremony at her high school.
Waldner, who is the first commit in the Lady Lions' 2011 recruiting class, averaged 9.0 points and 7.2 rebounds for the Eagles as a junior. She also rejected 5.0 shots per game. The Eagles finished the season with a 22-5 record and made it to the Region 6-AAAAA title game. Waldner was named to the all-region first-team as a junior. She chose Penn State over Georgia, Indiana, Boston College, Georgia Tech and Old Dominion.
