April 12, 2011
The Altoona Mirror

HOLLIDAYSBURG - The Hollidaysburg Area YMCA invites families throughout the community to come to Healthy Kids Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the YMCA on Hewit Street.

Healthy Kids Day is the Y's national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families and is the largest event of its kind in the nation.

The Y will provide activities and educational demonstrations on how to be more active and incorporate healthier habits at home. With the help from sponsors, MedExpress Urgent Care and Blair Medical Associates, some of the activities will include games, obstacle course, local fireman/ambulance, a petting zoo and information from local businesses, including Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Blair County, Home Nursing, Hollidaysburg Public Library and Diabetes Research, along with displays from local Boy Scout troops. One of the feature events will be educating children on the importance of bicycle safety with a bicycle derby. Children can take their bicycles and helmets to be inspected and can test their skills on the obstacle course.

Blair County Human Services has donated bike helmets to be given free to children that register (must be accompanied by a parent/guardian).

Michele Girdany, a volunteer, is asking the community to donate slightly used or new helmets by dropping them off at the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA before Saturday.

For more information, call the Y at 695-4467.
