[b]Johnstown opens exhibit[/b]

JOHNSTOWN - The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Johnstown will open its latest exhibition, "Allied Artists of Johnstown 79th Annual Juried Art Exhibition" on Sept. 2. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 2.

This year, the annual Allied Artists exhibition features 51 works created by 28 artists in a variety of media, including photography, watercolor, oil, acrylic, jewelry, pottery, glass and mixed media.

Artist Susan Palmisano will serve as exhibition juror. Palmisano is professor of painting and drawing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been exhibited in more than 50 national and international exhibitions, including recent shows in Barcelona, Kansas City, Mo., and Poland. She holds a B.F.A. in painting from the University of Dayton and an M.F.A. in painting from the University of Cincinnati.

SAMA-Johnstown will celebrate the exhibition's opening with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 2. The event is free and open to the public. The museum also will host a Lunch a l'Art program with Allied Artists members at noon Nov. 11.

The program includes lunch and a gallery tour by the exhibiting artists. Cost is $9 per person. Call the museum at 269-7234 by Nov. 9 for reservations.

[b]Auditions held for musical[/b]

JOHNSTOWN - On Aug. 30 and 31, (un)apolo-getic productions will hold auditions for a production of Richard O'Brien's cult classic musical "The Rocky Horror Show."

Auditions will be held at 7 p.m. at 1336 Oberlin St.

Actors wishing to audition should prepare a vocal selection from the show and be prepared to do cold readings.

(Un)apologetic will present the show from Oct. 20 to Oct. 29.

[b]New exhibit opens in Sept.[/b]

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona will open its latest exhibition, "Phillip Chan: Fallen Angels" on Sept. 16.

The exhibition features 40 works and celebrates Chan's contemplative and provocative "Fallen Angels" series. The exhibition will remain on view through Jan. 14.

Chan is currently a professor of art at Youngstown State University. He previously held teaching positions at other universities, including Penn State.

The museum will host a Lunch a l'Art program with the artist at noon Oct. 19. The program includes lunch and a presentation by Chan. Cost is $13 or $12 for SAMA members. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the museum at 946-4464.

The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art at Altoona is located in the Brett Building at 1210 11th Ave. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
