PITTSBURGH - Giant Eagle officials said Friday that River Ranch Fresh Foods LLC of Salinas, Calif., has notified Giant Eagle of the expansion of its lettuce and bagged salad recall, affecting Giant Eagle and another supermarket retailer due to the presence of listeria.
In addition to a previously announced recall of Giant Eagle Farmer's Market Shredded Iceberg Lettuce, the following items are also potentially affected, all with a use by date of Oct. 14: Giant Eagle Farmer's Market 7-ounce Parisian Blend, Giant Eagle Farmer's Market 9-ounce Leafy Romaine and Giant Eagle Farmer's Market 12-ounce Romaine Garden.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not contacted Giant Eagle regarding any confirmed cases of listeriosis related to this recall.
Representatives of the FDA earlier this week notified Giant Eagle and River Ranch of the presence of listeria in a routine random-sample test of Giant Eagle Farmer's Market 8-ounce package of Shredded Iceberg Lettuce. Subsequently, River Ranch has worked with officials to determine the source of the contamination, leading to additional products being included in the recall.
As with the prior shredded lettuce recall, Giant Eagle immediately removed the affected product from the shelf and implemented a register sale block to ensure that none of the product was inadvertently purchased. Additionally, the company called customers, who purchased the products, with instructions to dispose of the product or return it to the store for a refund.
