The New Choices Career Development Program offers free sessions for adults throughout the school year. There are no hidden costs or fees. The next session runs from March 12 through April 5. The class meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Greater Altoona Career & Technology Center.
Further funding assistance is available for those who complete a session. Once completed, the office can provide minimal funds toward retraining or job re-entry.
The sessions are designed to send participants on a self discovery to determine whether re-entering the job market or entering training is the answer. They will be enlightened about available resources.
The sessions entail:
n Assessment tools to help discover interests, aptitudes, personality.
n Instruction on stress management, time management, goal setting.
n Self esteem building, assertiveness training, problem solving skills.
n Discussions and research into non-traditional training or job leads.
n Resume writing, interviewing skills, job search skills.
n Math skills remediation, GED preparation and computer instruction.
n Information regarding schools available for training/further education.
n Resources to utilize for financial aid such as PELL, OVR or WIA funds.
