For more than 25 years Rush Limbaugh has been tolerated as untouchable, an "entertainer," a politically conservative, satirical voice, a talented businessman who has amassed a personal fortune and made millions for Clear Channel, the company which distributes his show, while adding to the bottom line of the 600 local outlets, like WRTA, that carry his program 15 hours a week. No longer.
Limbaugh's vicious, despicable characterization of Sandra Fluke has not only put the lie to those benign claims but also has exposed him to be what he has been all along, divisive and hateful.
Yes, there have been outrageous things said by those on the left toward Republican women (Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann come to mind), but there is a difference. Palin and Bachmann, were/are public officials. And none of the accusations came from individuals who compare to Limbaugh's command of the airwaves.
Limbaugh sexually degraded Sandra Fluke, a private citizen, over three broadcast days to a reputed audience of 20 million. Her "crime?" Advocating for insurance coverage for women's reproductive health.
No one can listen to Limbaugh and then claim to want to uplift political discourse. No one can listen to Limbaugh and then claim there needs to be more compromising of political differences.
That someone as repulsive as Limbaugh can draw an audience of that magnitude for 25 years is all you need to know as to why political dysfunction will continue to tear this country apart. Enough!
