Covering the bases

May 8, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: The Curve were off Monday and begin an unusual two-game series against Bowie at 6:30 tonight at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Wednesday's game is a morning contest at 10:30.

SAFE AT FIRST: Pitching matchups today: Curve LHP Kris Johnson (0-0, 0.66) vs. Baysox RHP Tim Bascom (2-1, 3.72).

STEALING SECOND: RHP Phil Irwin was added to the Curve roster Monday from extended spring training, where he was working through shoulder soreness. He made one rehab start for high-A Bradenton, allowing one run on two hits in five innings. Irwin figures to be a big addition to a pitching staff that has excelled lately. He went 8-4 with a 3.81 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) the second half of last season for the Curve.

ROUNDING THIRD: RHP Kyle Cofield was placed on the DL with elbow inflammation. He's 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA. The Curve also have received LHP Josh Poytress from high-A Bradenton, where he was 2-0 and did not allow a run in 16 1/2 innings over six appearances.

HEADING HOME: Tonight's promotion: Two-for-Tuesday (two tickets, two hot dogs, two small popcorns for price of one).
