B-A hoping for big things at track meet

May 14, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

From Mirror reports

If everything goes as planned, the Bellwood-Antis boys track team might need a few extra rooms at Shippensburg next weekend.

District 6 has announced the seedings for Tuesday's Class AA championship meet at Mansion Park, and the Blue Devils will be represented in nine events at the PIAA meet if they can finish in the top two in their respective events as they are seeded or match the state-qualifying standard that they've already achieved this year.

Seth Worthing is favored to qualify for states in four events - he's second in the 100-meter dash, has already run the qualifying time in the 200 and is part of the top-rated 400 and 1600 relay teams. In addition, Jeremy Claypoole is a prohibitive top seed in the triple jump and tied with Cambria Heights' Zack Prohonic as the No. 1 seed in the long jump.

Also well-positioned to qualify for states from Bellwood are hurdler Zach Sinisi (tied for top seed in the 300, seeded second to Central Cambria's Matt Pride in the 110 and part of the relays) and distance runner Kyle Bartlett (seeded second in the two-mile run).

Two other developing storylines involve competitors from Bellwood's chief rival, Tyrone. Nick Patton, a state gold medalist and two-time state silver medalist who also is a district record-holder in the 200, is seeded first in both the 200 and 400 and is one of four tied for third seed in the 100. However, Patton has been limited in the last few weeks with a pulled hamstring.

Meanwhile, Golden Eagle high jumper Charles Wilson-Adams is poised to challenge the fifth-oldest record in the 6-AA boys meet. United's Josh Vasas jumped 6 feet, 10 inches in 1998, a height Wilson-Adams has cleared this season. Northern Cambria's Tyler Olish is the second seed in the event at 6-4.

In addition, Northern Cambria sophomore Gus Yahner is seeded first in the pole vault, just 6 inches off the record of 14-6 set by Bellwood's Rudy Bilka in 1983.

Central Cambria's 3200 relay and Philipsburg-Osceola discus thrower are other area second seeds on the boys side.

Only three area girls head into the meet as top seeds: Central Cambria's Alyssa Brandis in the 3200, her teammate, Taylor King-Brothers, in the long jump and Northern Cambria's Liz Cunningham in the 400. King-Brothers also is the second seed in the 400, as is Brandis in the mile run and Cunningham in the 300 hurdles. Brandis is part of the second-seeded 3200 relay team, too.

Penn Cambria sprinter Carly Petney is seeded second in the 100.
