Covering the bases

May 15, 2012
The Altoona Mirror

LEADING OFF: The Curve, who have lost six in a row to fall to 13-22, were off Monday and begin a three-game series at Bowie tonight at 7:05.

SAFE AT FIRST: RHP Tim Alderson (1-1, 1.69) will start for Altoona vs. Baysox RHP Bobby Bundy (2-5, 4.26). Alderson will be making his first start as a full-time member of the Curve's rotation since July 12, 2010.

STEALING SECOND: The Curve are 4-14 on the road, which is the worst record in the Eastern League.

ROUNDING THIRD: Infielder Kelson Brown has been a nice surprise so far, hitting .320 in 18 games. He has received more playing time as the season has gone on thanks to injuries to other players. He has five RBIs and a .386 OBP.

HEADING HOME: RHP Duke Welker has been one of the top pitchers on the club, posting a 2.60 ERA in 11 relief appearances. He's on the Pirates' 40-man roster and could be in line for a call-up to Pittsburgh later this season if he keeps performing well.
